- Roelie Steyn

Things to do nearby

There is so much on offer within an hour of Bakkies B&B as we are ideally situated halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape in the hidden valley of Wellington.

The Berg River flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travelers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into the hinterland with their oxen and their wagons.

We are proud to offer and recommend the following attractions and related activities.

Mountain Bike Trail

things-to-do-in-wellingtonThe route is mainly single-track and winds through orchards, vineyards and pristine Fynbos, ascending onto the Groenberg, before descending steeply down to the Kromme River. Choose from this technically-challenging steep finish, or a slightly less challenging "chicken run", both of which run along the banks of a tranquil stream through a natural forest. The second part of the route takes you towards Bainskloof Pass, up a strenuous single-track climb and finally back towards Welvanpas farm, on a single-track carved into steep slopes of the Bainskloof foothills. Cycle along the historic Bainskloof Pass and enjoy the natural splendor and spectacular views. Enquiries: 021 873 7434

Wellington Wine Walk

Leisurely-paced walks in the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains, through fynbos, vineyards, olive groves, buchu and vine-cutting plantations and of course, wine tasting.

Winner of the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2008. Enquiries: 083 313 8383.

Limietberg Nature Reserve

Many of the walks within the Limietberg Nature Reserve start at the top of the Bainskloof Pass at Bainskloof Corner Lodge. These range from short ambles to full-day or overnight hikes and are well worth the effort for the spectacular views at the top of the pass! Enquiries for the Limietberg Hiking Trail: 021 423 9611.

Mountain Passes

Spend a day touring the lush valley farmlands and breathtaking mountain ranges. Take a circular drive, incorporating the spectacular Bainskloof and other local passes, each with its own fascinating history. The landscape, architecture, flora and fauna offer unparalleled photographic opportunities.
